Think good thoughts.

The spring semester began yesterday at the strike of 12 and I am already ready to lose my mind. I know, I know, it sounds over-dramatic, but I can be because I want to complain.

My agenda is already over-filled with assignments, readings, and projects that need to be completed within the next 15 weeks, and can we just talk about how I have already spent $300 on books…not including the 4 books that are in my “save for later” pile on Amazon. It is always overwhelming when you go to deposit money at the bank and then not even 3 hours later, blow most of it on grown-up expenses

*surprise you have money!! oh, just kidding, no you don’t*

After my day at school, I had to run to Target [shocker] to pick up a couple of binders and a new pen/pencil pouch, considering my orange highlighter decided to explode all over my now-old one. When I was there, of course I had to take a look around the little dollar section, like I always do. I wasn’t going to look at anything but the 4 binders that I needed, because I was in a terrible mood and just wanted to go home and lay in bed and start my homework, but I am glad I did.

For $1, I found this little wooden inspirational sign that reads “THINK GOOD THOUGHTS” [pictured in this post] and, holy cow, did I need this today more than ever. I have been so overwhelmed with basically everything lately, mostly because the next 6 or so months will bring about some big changes. I went right home and placed it on my little cube dresser for me to see everyday, both when I wake up in the morning and go to bed at night.

Already, this little motivator has reminded me of all the good that did happen today. I was able to turn in a voucher to get the tuition for one of my classes completely covered, I applied [and am continuing to apply] to new jobs, an older man at the bank told me I had pretty eyes, and my coffee this morning was made with the perfect amount of cream and sugar.

No matter how crappy things look in that moment, there will always be something positive to remember to put your mind at ease. It is just your job [or a mini-dollar-section-inspirational sign’s] job to remind you of that. xoxo.

You fancy, huh?

One of the sad truths that go along with working retail is the business that comes from three-day weekends. I barely had time to breathe yesterday, [hence my lack of blog post yesterday], but I had a nice lil break when my hunny took me out to a nice, fancy dinner date. We’ve made this an annual event – taking one day out the year and treating ourselves to time alone with a nice meal – at a restaurant we wouldn’t normally go to on a semi-frequent basis.

If you haven’t been to Ristorante Lombardo on Hertel Avenue in Buffalo, New York, I suggest you get off your butt and go.

I kind of had no idea what to expect when we walked in, mostly because I don’t normally dress in a pencil skirt and pumps to go out to dinner. The restaurant itself was gorgeous – dim lighting, gold ceilings, paintings on the wall, the staff was more than pleasant, and the food…oh my god. I can honestly say it is the best meal I’ve had in my 24 years of life. Being Italian, I can be somewhat picky when it comes to eating Italian anywhere but my own home, but let me shout from the rooftops that this food compares to nothing I’ve ever eaten in my life. I had Eggplant al Forno and ate the entire thing. No shame.

I’ve probably driven past this restaurant 86,000 times since Jon lives in the neighborhood surrounding Hertel and I could kick myself for never going here before. But I’ll definitely be back again. xoxo.

My current go-to playlist.

1. Paris by The Chainsmokers. I’m still waiting for the day that this duo releases a single that I don’t love. I mean, who still can’t get Closer out if their head!? Their newest single is just as good, if not better, than the rest.

2. Higher by Rihanna. I’m still on an Anti kick, even months later. This is one of my favorites off the album, but honestly, who can even choose just one favorite?

3. Out of my Head by The Griswolds. You can’t help but belt this bad boy out. This newest single of theirs will put you in a feel-good “I can kick anyone’s ass” kind of mood. [SIDE NOTE: someone come see them with me at The Waiting Room in March!!]

4. The Pocket by Andy Grammer. Can we just discuss how I’ve loved this dude for years and now he’s always a fill-in on the Today Show and performing halftime shows at major football games?? I saw him for FIVE DOLLARS at Niagara University a few years back and it was one of the best shows I’ve seen! This is a little bop from his first album, but it never gets old.

5. Past Lives by Børns. I love how this song goes from being melodramatic to a song you can dance to at the bar with your friends or sing at the top of your lungs in the car. Added bonus, he’s so hot.

6. Pop Style by Drake. When I saw Drake over the summer, this was one of the best he performed in concert. It’s always a go-to. I don’t think I’ll ever stop!

7. Strange Love by Halsey. Most commonly, this song tends to be linked to my boy Matty Healy, but the beats are so unique. And her voice…wow. I can truthfully say she sounds just as good in person, too. I had the chance to see her open for Imagine Dragons before she exploded into the spotlight.

8. Need to Know by Macklemore feat. Chance the Rapper. I never really used to be a big Macklemore fan until my brother turned me onto him. His new album didn’t get as much hype as the last one, but I tend to like the albums and songs that other people don’t for lord only know what reason.

9. Mercy by Matt Nathanson. He speaks the truth in every single one of his songs, this one no different than the rest. Plus, his music always reminds me of summer, which is perfect right now considering we’re in the depths of winter.

10. Paris by The 1975. This is my favorite song off of ILIWYS. It’s just so smooth and easy on the ears. Plus Matty has the voice of an angel.

How does the oven work, again?

There is nothing I hate more than cooking. Baking, not so much. But overall, yuck.

I, like most girls my age, am sucked into the wonderful world of Pinterest. You would think by the looks of it that I actually knew what I was doing in the kitchen because my top 2 boards with the most pins are EAT and SWEETS & TREATS. [Follow me!].

I am making it my personal goal for this year to keep adding to this list and actually cooking the dishes I think I’ll like. You’ve all heard it here first. It’s gonna happen.

From what I have so far, I’ve narrowed it down to 10 recipes I’d like to try to successfully execute without burning down my house or my boyfriends apartment within the next couple of months. They are outside the box from what I usually eat, so it should be interested.

I’ll have to keep you update on the status of each home, because having them remain standing in one piece is not guaranteed.

  1. Almond Joy Poke Cake
  2. Chocolate Chip Cookies and Milk Cake
  3. Lighter Mini Cheesecakes with Oreo Crust
  4. Chocolate Pecan Coconut Cookies
  5. Peach Crunch Cake
  6. Roasted Butternut Squash Quinoa Salad
  7. Slow Cooker Stuffed Pepper Soup
  8. Baked Black Bean and Sweet Potato Flautas
  9. BLT Chicken Salad Stuffed Avocados
  10. Crispy Orange Cauliflower

What are some of your favorite recipes? I’d love to know and try them out! xoxo.

The struggle of figuring out how to adult.

With about one semester left of grad school, it’s starting to smack me in the face that one day I’m gonna have to “grow up.”Actually, not just one day. It’s one day soon. Part of this sad reality came from asking for business attire, a blender, and money to put towards college tuition for Christmas and birthday gifts. How wild is that?

My boyfriend and I even bought a cute little dry erase calendar for the apartment to try to organize everything as best we can. Although the calendar looks full, it’s really only appointments, schedules, birthdays, and little events that are on there.

The more and more I try to plan out and organize each new month, the more I see that even though I think I am so busy or stressed now, chances are, I have no idea what is coming for me. I mean honestly, I only have to take care of myself – get myself to class, get myself to work, buy food for myself, make sure my homework is done. I don’t have a home to take care of, kids, anything like that.

The older I get, the more I am realizing that not everything can be planned out. My boyfriend is often a good reminder of that, as he always tells me that there are certain things in life that will happen unexpectedly. That there are things that will be thrown at you that you can’t prepare for. The more I realize this, the more I realize how much admiration I have for my parents and my grandparents for doing everything they do without losing their minds.

There are so many of my friends that seem to have everything figured out. They are either engaged or married, have kids, have a house, a stable job,  and have what seems to be an established life. Sometimes seeing all these posts on social media can knock me down a bit, because here I am at age 24, still in school, still waiting for a big-girl job that is not being a retail manager, still waiting for “life to begin.” While I know that 24 is still so young, it can still be hard feeling like there’s so much more you feel like you could have done in these few short years – things that are different than what you actually did.

While things can get overwhelming, I have to realize how lucky I actually am. I have a family who loves me. Friends who are always there for me. A boyfriend who supports me. A chubby little guinea pig. A roof over my head. [A little] money in the bank. An opportunity to further my education. I have food on my plate and a warm bed to crawl into every night. And that’s pretty damn awesome.

Hopefully one day soon, I’ll figure out this whole grown-up thing. I won’t want to nap to get away from the world. I’ll choose a pencil skirt and heels over distressed denim and converse. I won’t want to have ice cream for dinner. And once I do, I hope I’ll be able to look back and wonder why the heck I was ever stressing out in the first place.

Things I’m currently obsessed with.

1. NYX Butter Lipstick in the shade Sugar Wafer (BLS13). Holy hell do I love this shade. The formula is creamy as hell, which makes it perfect for the chapped winter lips, and the color is perfect if you know you want to wear a lippie, but don’t want to go bold. It goes with honestly everything. I snagged this shade at Nordstrom Rack for $4!

2. Drive Like I Do by Drive Like I Do. If anyone knows me, they know my obsession with the band The 1975. Lately, I have been going back and nonstop listing to the pre-1975 era 1975. If you are new to the fandom and didn’t know about the pre-existing life of Matty and the boys, listen to this album. Right now.

3. Parenthood. I will admit, I am sooooo late to this party. I was recently looking into new shows to watch on Netflix and landed upon Parenthood. It’s something I always wanted to start but for some reason, never did. I am about 6 episodes in, and I am hooked. [Honestly, I’m sitting here counting down the minutes until I can go home and watch more].

4. Strawberry, peach and banana smoothies. I’ve been on a smoothie kick lately. Usually late at night, I crave something sweet like ice cream. But I’ve turned to the alternative that is smoothies. It is cold like ice cream. Kind of tastes like a milkshake. But is so much better for you. And sooo easy to make [thanks to the NutriBullet]. Once I’ve 100% perfected my recipe, maybe I’ll share.

5. Oversized sweaters. Okay, okay. This really isn’t anything too out of the ordinary for me or anyone. But lately, the last few sweaters I’ve purchased I’ve gotten in a L/XL size because, duh, they are soooooo warm and cozy and so perfect to pear with leggings or skinny denim. And, you still look cute and put together and appropriate for [most of] the work environment! So technically, this is a win-win.

Farewell, President Obama.

In 2008, President Obama became the first African American man ever elected President. The Obamas were a top-notch family. No scandals, no turmoil. Not everybody had to like him, but I did. [DISCLAIMER: I will never tell anybody who to like vs. who not to like – this is solely my own opinion!]. To me, he was not some figure that I couldn’t relate to. He just seemed like a normal, everyday man with a normal, everyday family. Heck, Michelle often rocked these killer outfits that were affordable from stores that even I shopped at!

With the end of his Presidency near, here are some of my favorite things that President Obama has said over the last 8 years.

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” – President Obama, on change.

“Tonight, we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to. That is our history, whether it’s the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a better place.” – President Obama, on the potential of America

“If we aren’t willing to pay a price for our values, then we should ask ourselves whether we truly believe in them at all.” – President Obama, on the importance of values

“We still believe that this should be a place where you can make it if you try.” – President Obama, on making it

“We have an obligation and responsibility to be investing in our students and our schools. We must make sure that people who have the grades, the desire and the will, but not the money, can still get the best education possible.” – President Obama, on the importance of higher education

“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law – for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.” – President Obama, on marriage equality

“We must carry forward the work of the women who came before us and ensure our daughters have no limits on their dreams, no obstacles to their achievements, and no remaining ceilings to shatter.” – President Obama, on glass ceilings and achieving dreams

“If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress.”  – President Obama, on change

“Sometimes, when we’re lying together, I look at her and I feel dizzy with the realization that here is another distinct person from me, who has memories, origins, thoughts, feelings that are different from my own. That tension between familiarity and mystery meshes something song between us. Even if one builds a life together based on trust, attentiveness and mutual support, I think that it’s important that a partner continues to surprise.” – President Obama, on Michelle

And, how could we forget his love for children! [Warning: your heart will melt]

Thank you for the last 8 years, Mr. President. On to the next chapter. xoxo.

And it was all yellow.

So I, like many other girls in the world, am obsessed with the award show season. Truthfully, I don’t even really care much about the awards shows as much as I do the red carpet. I often find myself looking at all of these glamorous outfits wishing I was still 18 years old preparing for the senior prom, wearing one of these dresses.

There were sooooo many A+ looks this year [did you see Olivia Culpo?! or Emma Stone?!], but there was one thing [well, color] that stood out the most….yellow.

I, for one, am not usually a huge fan of the color. It reminds me a little bit of Big Bird or something, but let me just tell you how huge of a fan I was of EVERY SINGLE yellow dress on the red carpet of the 2017 Golden Globes last night. Holy cow! See some of my favorite bursts of sunshine below:

Emily Ratajkowski wearing Reem Acra

Reese Witherspoon wearing Versace

Natalie Portman wearing Prada

Maisie Williams wearing ???

Viola Davis wearing Michael Kors

Seeing these fabulous ladies rocking the yellow threads makes me want to expand my horizons past my usual [and boring] neutral clothing palette. I can’t wait to see what sorts of looks the next awards shows will bring. xoxo.

SOS! Send help!

I am looking into ways that I can get my daily dose of caffeine [or other means for energy] without necessarily depending on cups and cups of coffee.

One thing I’ve wanted to work on this year is monitoring my cofffee consumption. I waste a disgusting amount of money on coffee every month, and am not a really big fan of drinking coffee black. So far, I have relentlessly failed. In the last 8 days I’ve probably drank more cups of coffee than I can count on my hands and toes combined.

If you know any tricks or tips on how to eliminate the overdose of caffeine while still maintaining high energy throughout the day, please let me know. xoxo.

New music from Ed Sheeran?!

I repeat..NEW MUSIC FROM ED SHEERAN! It may have only been since 2015 since he gave us something new, but those 2 years felt like 20. Am I right!?

I was perfectly okay with the release of a new single, but then I saw it. There were not only one, but two, and I could not contain my excitement!

Shape of You and Castle on the Hill weren’t done in typical Ed fashion, but boy, to me, they were done perfectly. It’s like in the last 2 years, Ed found an entire new side of himself and I love it. Synthesized beats, a compelling chorus, and fast pace melodies make me so excited for this new album to be released [finally]. He’s back and he’s not messing around!

Find these songs. Sit there. And listen. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Thank you Ed, you rock. xoxo.
